Sleep deprivation gives ''cardiovascular risk'' A recent study has suggested that sleep deprivation doubles the risk of a person getting cardiovascular diseases, diabetes or high blood pressure, it has emerged.

The New Straits Times Online has highlighted recent data presented by the National Sleep Foundation, which understood that seven to eight hours of sleep a night for adults was the best way to keep healthy and avoid the possibility of these problems.

However, Sophia Wong of the Malaysian Dieticians'' Association highlighted the importance of eating complex carbohydrates to fight any possibility of insomnia and promoting sleep, which can be found in cereals, oats or toasted bread.

It was added that regular insomnia could be fought against with the use of vitamins B6 and B12, which occur naturally in dairy products, salmon, almonds, seaweed, cashew nuts and bran.

Help Guide also noted that insomnia could be caused by smoking, as nicotine is a stimulant.

It continued: "Additionally, smokers actually experience nicotine withdrawal as the night progresses, making it hard to sleep."
