Sleep ''boosts productivity''
06/10/2008
The attitude towards sleep in modern times has been questioned by a reporter who noted that many people could wrongly follow an age-old phrase.
Leslie Berlin noted that the classic line "I''ll sleep when I''m dead" may be popular with many and could have been for a long time, given that it is an updated version of the popular Benjamin Franklin line "in the grave will be sleeping enough".
Speaking to Dr Jeffrey Ellenbogen of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital''s Sleep Laboratory, the New York Times writer stated that many compare a sleeping brain to an unproductive sleeping computer, when in reality it helped learning, memory and performance.
Dr Ellenbogen said: "There is a cultural bias against sleep that sees it as akin to shutting down, or even to death."
Harvard University is famous for the education of seven American presidents - John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Rutherford B Hayes, John F Kennedy, Franklin Roosevelt and Theodore Roosevelt.
